Something CAN be done about it: Man the Solver – part one

Outer Hebrides Community-owned wind farm funds planting of 211,000 trees

Intro by Steve Cook

The solutions are out there. Let’s not get fixated on how horrible everything is and devote our attention and creativity to energising and expanding and compounding and building upon the rightnesses. Because that is how individuals, groups and civilisations grow and move forward.

This new series, Man the Solver, will bring you news about those rightnesses and the people who are doing something about it. There are a lot of unsung heroes out there, so let’s sing about them.

This news comes from the Outer Hebrides in the UK, a brilliant community-based initiative that sets a good example for the rest of us of how advance comes from the grass roots.

A community-owned wind farm in the Outer Hebrides is funding a project to plant at least a million native trees on crofts by 2030. So far, 211,000 trees have been planted on 245 crofts to create small woods, promoting nature restoration and biodiversity.
The initiative is primarily funded by profits from the UK’s largest community-owned wind farm near Stornoway. It generates £900,000 annually from three 3MW wind turbines. These profits are reinvested into local community projects, including the ambitious reforestation initiative.
This green energy project has already helped establish three new tree nurseries on the islands.
.Crofters are in charge of planting on their own land, working with project advisors and forestry experts. The new woodlands feature a variety of species including alder, hazel, birch, rowan, and Scots pine. Some crofters have even included fruit orchards in their planting.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
