The pharmaceutical industry and the psychiatric industry form an unholy alliance, generating profits from human misery.
Their business model is simple; list out and group together a set of emotional and behavioural characteristics and give them a scientific-sounding psychiatric label. Then prescribe psychiatric drugs like antidepressants to those who present with that label.
Prescribed for everything from learning and behavioural problems, bedwetting, premenstrual tension, juvenile delinquency, aggression, criminality, drug addiction and smoking, to handling the fears and problems of the elderly, antidepressants are among the most widely prescribed drugs in England.
Figures published by the NHS Business Services Authority show that antidepressant prescribing between 2019 and 2023 in England alone cost taxpayers £1.058 billion. That figure represents an impressive marketing strategy in view of the number of lives lost.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed the number of deaths from drug poisoning by antidepressants in England and Wales from 1993 to 2021 was 13,254.
It’s well known that those taking antidepressants can experience paradoxical effects that include violence, aggression, suicidal thoughts and suicidal behaviour. When a suicide is linked to antidepressant usage, psychiatrists habitually blame the catastrophic failure on the person’s mental troubles while consistently denying the liabilities of their prescribing habits.
A mantra commonly repeated by the mental health industry is benefits of the treatment outweigh the risks. It would be more accurate to say profits outweigh the risks.
Another mantra commonly used when things go wrong is ‘lessons need to be learned.’
Based on the number of deaths linked to mental health services, lessons definitely aren’t been learned. It’s a vacuous mantra.
The commercial success of psychiatric drugs will please shareholders and company executives but they don’t have to live with the ‘prescribed harm’ that has destroyed so many lives.
Informed consent is defined as, “permission granted in full knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with knowledge of the possible risks and benefits.”
Imagine a world where people were fully informed about the effects of antidepressants or any other psychiatric drug for that matter. Their fully informed choices would probably be different as would the pharmaceutical company balance sheets.
