UK Government gets busy on new GMOs

GM WATCH

On April Fools Day 2025 the House of Commons silently agreed the Regulations that will operationalise the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. This signals the door opening for unlabelled, untraceable and un-risk assessed new GMOs in our food and farming systems.

Our Executive Director Leonie Nimmo reflects on the strange affair and a lone voice of dissent in Westminster.

The Regulations were laid before Parliament on the 25th February. For those of us holding on to a glimmer of hope that the Labour government would do things differently to the Tories and allow for freedom of choice over new GMOs, it was a dark day indeed. Labour switched its position along with its benches, abandoning the caution it had advocated whilst in opposition and enthusiastically batting for the biotech industry.

A month later the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee published a report that raised serious concerns about the Regulations – notably impacts on trade, consumers and farmers. The parliamentary committee that discussed the Regulations swiftly dispensed with the SLSC’s report.

Tell Government: All genetically engineered seeds must be labelled!

The UK government’s consultation on whether or not it will label the seeds of new GMOs will close on the 14th April. The stakes are high – they include the future viability of organic and non-GMO food production and the ability of growers and food producers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to abide by their national laws.

The questions are focussed on business impacts but the outcome will affect everyone who buys seeds. Whether you’re a commercial food producer or home gardener, now is a crucial time to fight for your freedom of choice over what you plant.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
