Pro-Palestine activists go door-to-door to sway voters

Critics claim campaigners risk ‘distracting voters from local issues’ by urging them to back pro-Gaza candidates in May elections

Pro-Palestine activists are intimidating voters into backing pro-Gaza candidates at the May local elections, it has been claimed.

Grassroots campaigners for the Vote Palestine 2026 movement are accused of making lists of people who fail to denounce Israel as they go door-to-door.

Critics claim that the activists risk “stoking divisive sectarian politics and hatred”, and “distracting voters from local issues” by injecting Gaza into the heart of the local elections in two months.

Vote Palestine 2026, launched on Feb 24, is determined to gain the backing of councillors and the electorate and mobilise them into supporting the cause of the Palestinians in Gaza.

More than 1,000 councillors have already signed a pledge rejecting “genocide” in Gaza, including 59 per cent of councillors in both Islington and Tower Hamlets.

Some 40 per cent of councillors in Woking have made the pledge, followed by 35 per cent in Edinburgh City and 30 per cent in Bradford

But the group’s tactics have been criticised. A spokesman for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Unlike regular canvassing, which is designed to identify supporters, these crazed activists are making lists of those who don’t agree with them. This is despicable intimidation masquerading as virtuous activism, and with local elections upon us, it risks becoming voter intimidation.

“All political parties should condemn this conduct and the authorities must investigate.”

At a launch event, Jeanine Hourani of the Palestine Youth movement pledged to “confront Zionism wherever it is” by mobilising as many people as possible into backing pro-Gaza politicians.

To achieve its aims, the operation has established a five-prong approach: canvassing, business outreach, phone-banking, emailing candidates and devising motions.

The website also includes guidance on the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities such as changing timings if locals are “observing Ramadan” or to bring a translator if locals are not fluent in English.

Already, some 13 local groups have been established across Britain including in Kensington and Chelsea, Birmingham, Sheffield and Newcastle.

The spokesman for the Campaign Against Antisemitism added: “Far-Left ideologues and sectarian activists are hell-bent on putting a foreign conflict in which Britain is not involved at the centre of national and local politics in this country.

“Knowing that they cannot actually effect change thousands of miles away, they are left pursuing intimidatory tactics here at home, going door to door to impose purity tests on Jews and other Britons, demanding that they denounce the world’s only Jewish state.”

Kevin Hollinrake, the Tory Party chairman, said: “Local elections should be about fixing potholes, collecting bins and genuinely local issues.

“Under no circumstance should they be used to import international conflicts into town halls.”

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
