Labour hits rural landlords with ‘nice pub tax’

Tories say new guidance will mean last orders ‘for countless beloved watering holes’

NICK GUTTERIDGE

Rural landlords are to be hit with a “nice pub tax” under new government guidelines.

HMRC has ordered officials to levy higher business rates on pubs that are in “attractive locations”, play an important role in the community, or are based in “character properties”.

Taverns which have playgrounds and large car parks also face higher rates, as do gastro pubs that serve a “premium-priced menu”.

The Tories described the raid as a “nice pub tax”, and said it would lead to “last orders for countless beloved watering holes”.

The Telegraph is running a Save Our Pubs campaign, which calls on Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, to cut the tax burden on struggling landlords.

But valuations are expected to rocket this year, leading to much higher tax bills that industry leaders have warned many in the sector cannot afford.

Sir James Cleverly, the shadow communities secretary, said: “Labour’s business rates raid is heaping misery on to struggling pubs across England. Having promised to get bills down, Rachel Reeves has instead sent them soaring.

“Now ministers have some of Britain’s best boozers in their crosshairs, singling them out for special punishment. Gastropubs, pubs in ‘attractive locations’, and even community pubs are in the firing line.

“Under Labour, it will be last orders for countless beloved watering holes. The Conservatives are the only party that will back Britain’s pubs. We will scrap business rates entirely for thousands of pubs, restaurants and shops, and deliver stronger high streets.”

HMRC has issued guidance to tax officials telling them what they should take into account when calculating the new rateable value for a pub.

Those that will attract higher values include pubs based in “attractive locations”, with officials giving the example of establishments which have river frontages or a nice view.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
