Say No to ID Checks for Web Access

OPEN RIGHTS GROUP
.
On Monday MPs are voting on the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill.
.
Amendments in this bill could give Ministers the power to restrict Internet services unless users go through an ID check to prove they are 18. They can also impose curfews so that after a certain time, services can’t be accessed without an ID check.
.
The powers don’t just cover social media, but all “internet services’. This means everything from blogs and websites to online games and apps. Ministers wouldn’t even have to prove that these sites are harmful for children.
.
We have until Monday to tell MPs to save free access to the Internet!
..
If a Minister used this power all adults would have to go through a digital ID check to prove their age to access services.
.
Anyone refusing to hand over sensitive data to a third-party could face blocks, or time restricted curfews.
.
Instead of building identity checkpoints into the Internet, the Government should focus on addressing the structural causes of online harms — including surveillance-driven advertising models and the market dominance of a small number of major platforms. Stronger competition measures and interoperability would give users and parents greater choice and control without requiring identity checks for lawful speech.
Privacy-invasive age gates will not solve the structural problems with social media, nor will they address the power of large technology platforms. They may instead reduce opportunities for parents to introduce children to online environments gradually and responsibly, while pushing teenagers towards unregulated spaces.
.
Please write to your MP today and say no to ID checks for web access!

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
