The UK’s Online Safety Act becomes law, requiring ID verification for sites containing “adult” content, risking privacy with data hacks, leaks, and government access to private messages.
The Age Verification Mandate
The core of the new legislation is a requirement that any website potentially containing adult content must verify the age of its users. This isn’t limited to explicit sites; it could encompass a wide range of platforms where adult material might appear. The verification process is invasive, demanding one or more of the following from users:
- A face scan
- A government-issued ID (passport, driving license, etc.)
- A video submission
- Other forms of identity verification (up to seven different methods)
This means that, to access certain sites, UK citizens must hand over some of their most sensitive personal data—not just to government agencies, but to a multitude of private companies.
The Contradiction in Data Handling
Ironically, the UK government has long cautioned citizens against sharing sensitive identification information online. For example, when updating passport details, users are repeatedly warned not to distribute this data. Yet, under the new law, the same government is effectively mandating that people submit this information to potentially thousands of private entities, many of which have checkered histories when it comes to data security.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
