The Conservative Party has launched a new campaign calling on Keir Starmer to sack Chancellor Rachel Reeves, accusing her of misleading the public about the state of the nation’s finances ahead of next week’s Budget.
A dedicated website, SackReeves.com, has been set up for voters to register what the party describes as growing public anger at the Chancellor’s conduct.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the Chancellor’s position had become untenable, declaring that honesty matters.

The row intensified after the Office for Budget Responsibility, OBR, released a detailed account of its recent discussions with the Treasury on Friday. The letter has renewed scrutiny of Ms Reeves following weeks of media briefings suggesting the Government faced a fiscal shortfall of up to £30 billion.
OBR Letter Contradicts Treasury Briefings
According to OBR chairman Richard Hughes, the Chancellor and her officials had at no point faced a fiscal hole greater than £2.5 billion, far below what had been reported. The watchdog also confirmed that on 31 October, it upgraded its forecasts and informed Ms Reeves that the Treasury would in fact have a £4.2 billion surplus, even after weaker productivity projections.
Despite this, Ms Reeves held a press conference on 4 November, warning that challenging forecasts had consequences for the public finances and implying that painful decisions, including potential income tax rises, might be necessary. She said at the time, I’m being honest with people.
The following week, Labour abruptly ruled out income tax increases, claiming the position had shifted due to updated OBR figures. However, the OBR states that no revised forecast was issued between Ms Reeves’s press conference and the Government’s reversal.
Conservatives Accuse Reeves of Misrepresentation
Ms Badenoch accused the Chancellor of using exaggerated claims to justify tax increases and additional welfare spending in Wednesday’s Budget.
Posting on X, she wrote:
“Sack Reeves Now. We have learned that the Chancellor misrepresented the OBR’s forecasts. She sold her Benefits Street Budget on a lie. Honesty matters. Tell Starmer what he must already know, she has to go.”
The Conservative petition page states:
“Rachel Reeves wanted her Budget for Benefits Street so badly, she lied about the OBR’s forecasts. All so she could justify breaking her promise not to raise tax on working people. Labour’s lies are costing us more and more.”
Pressure Mounts on Starmer
Downing Street has not publicly responded to the petition or the Conservative Party’s accusations. However, the OBR’s intervention has intensified questions over the Chancellor’s handling of Treasury communications and the accuracy of the briefings issued in the weeks leading up to the Budget.
Critics argue that the Government may have undermined its early economic credibility by overstating the financial challenges it inherited.
Whether Keir Starmer stands by his Chancellor or yields to mounting pressure will now be a key test of his leadership, and a major political flashpoint in the days ahead.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
