Reeves Comes for the Family Doctor

Rachel Reeves continues her assualt on the middle – class in Britain with her latest policy idea floated to the media. She is coming for the lawyers, doctors and accountants. You don’t get much more middle – class than that.

The Times of London reported on Tuesday that “Rachel Reeves will launch a £2 billion tax raid on lawyers, family doctors and accountants as she seeks to balance the books by targeting the wealthy. The chancellor is expected to use the budget to impose a new charge on people who use limited liability partnerships as she tries to fill a £30 billion hole in the public finances.

More than 190,000 workers use partnerships, particularly in the legal world, and they offer a significant tax benefit over ordinary employment. They are not subject to employer’s national insurance as partners are treated as self-employed. Reeves is said to consider this unfair and is expected to announce changes to the system in her budget. She has repeatedly said that “those with the broadest shoulders” should pay their “fair share of tax”, and many of those who use partnerships are high earners.”

High earners. How very dare they? Remember she is already proposing to tax the sale of the family home of the ‘wealthy.’

Chancellor Reeves will tell you these lawyers, accountants and doctors all of whom will have spent about seven years qualifying are the ‘wealthy’ who must pay their ‘fair share.’ She will tell you that their current tax arrangements are some kind of ‘tax giveaway.’ Let’s remember that in the UK, the top 0.1% of earners pay more income tax than the entire bottom 50%. The majority of people in the UK take out more from the state than they ever put in.

(HM Treasury, the Department where they plot day and night how to tax the middle – class even more. August 2024. The War Rooms are underneath it and well worth a tour.)

The Chancellor will point the finger of blame at the ‘big earners,’ stoke class warfare implying that these accountants, lawyers and doctors are some kind Brit – like carpet baggers, just preying on the poor.

The Times says, “More than 13,000 partners earn an average of £1.25 million each a year. Solicitors who draw profits from partnerships make an average of £316,000 a year. The family doctors make £118,000 and accountants an average of £246,000. A solicitor in a partnership earning the average £316,000 would face a charge of £23,000 under proposals drawn up by economists, equivalent to an average tax rate of 7.3 per cent.”

It amazes that there remain 13,000 partners in the UK able to earn an average of £1.25 million each a year. Then there are the solicitors making £316,000 a year. They will all be taxed. The family doctors who make £118,000, average for London and the south east, are now considered ‘wealthy.’

Your family doctor will have already trained for about 7 years, running up tuition fees of £9.5k per year, excluding living expenses which most British students accumulate as they study away from home. They will have been a junior doctor for a number of years and although I do not agree with the strikes no one can say the 12 hour shifts in the socialised health system are easy.

At some point these people become the ‘wealthy’ family doctors, many of whom are women and earn a whopping £118k. I need to sit down.

This does not make them wealthy, it makes them the comfortable middle – class. These people are not spending their income on private jets. They probably were spending it on private school fees for their children, which have increased due to Reeves’ vindictive VAT policy. These family doctors are the ‘broad shoulders’ upon which Reeves intends to balance the books, with a massive £30 billion black hole.

Then there are the accountants who earn £250k. Sure, it is a lot of money even for the south east of England but I’d still prefer that they keep most of their profits than see it buried in the black hole that is the British State, with it’s every growing civil service, growing bill to accommodate asylum seekers and transfer payments. A report from the National Audit Office revealed that asylum accommodation contracts, initially estimated to have a total contract cost of £4.5 billion, is now estimated to cost £15.3 billion over ten years. 15 Billion is a lot, all earned by private companies which do not seem to be a target for Reeves.

As I wrote before, this targeting of the middle – class is a plan straight out of hell. CS Lewis in his masterpiece the Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Proposes a Toast has a senior devil instructing his junior demons on just how to pull down the middle – class, something that was absolutely critical to the destruction of souls. First, education must be destroyed.

Labour’s liquidation of the Middle-Class

Labour’s moronic policy of slapping VAT on private school fees in the UK has resulted in pupil numbers dropping by 3.5% for primary school. So things are all going to plan then.

It was no surprise that Reeves went for the children of the middle- class first, by making it increasingly difficult for them to be educated outside the state system. Although many private schools arguably joined in this attack, with the outrageous hiking of fees to fund the outrageous swimming pools and concerts halls, it was a Labour government that whacked in the final nail in the coffin.

Then there are penal taxes. Screwtape explaining the evil nature of an excessive tax burden says “Penal taxes, designed for that purpose, are liquidating the Middle Class, the class who were prepared to save and spend and make sacrifices in order to have their children privately educated.

The removal of this class, besides linking up with the abolition of education, is, fortunately, an inevitable effect of the spirit that says I’m as good as you. This was, after all, the social group which gave to the humans the overwhelming majority of their scientists, physicians, philosophers, theologians, poets, artists, composers, architects, jurists, and administrators. If ever there were a bunch of stalks that needed their tops knocked off, it was surely they. As an English politician remarked not long ago, “A democracy does not want great men.”

There we go. Accountants, lawyers and doctors, even those earning £1.25 million a year, are middle – class if they live in the south east of England. Resist the urge to think these people are the super wealthy, international jet set who can pack up and leave to another country. They are not. And should your family doctor on £118k (who is put in the same bracket as the millionaire solicitor) decides to shut up shop, the rest of us will have to wait even longer to see a GP. Do we understand the problem?

These ‘wealthy’ people are mostly ordinary men and women who have worked hard, toiled away for at least a decade and come good. Sure, they may have had some family wealth behind them but they are still hard workers, probably live in the south east of England, eat out in a restaurant, enjoy a family holiday and send their kids to private school. Maybe they drive a ‘fancy car’. So what?

Reeves will continue to liquidate the middle – class, the class that built Britain. They are the only ones left to squeeze yet more money out of. It’s nothing but nasty class – warfare.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
