Rival groups clash at migrant hotel protests
Rival groups clashed outside migrant hotels as protests spread across the country on Saturday.
Demonstrations under the Abolish Asylum System banner calling for an end to housing asylum seekers in hotels were organised in dozens of towns and cities across Britain.
Campaign group Stand Up To Racism vowed to confront and drown out the protests, leading to scuffles in areas such as Bristol, Horley, Liverpool, Perth and Newcastle.
This summer’s wave of unrest first began in Epping after an asylum seeker from Ethiopia was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old schoolgirl, which he denies.
On Tuesday, Epping Forest district council was granted a temporary injunction to remove asylum seekers from the Bell Hotel in Essex from Sept 12.
The Home Secretary will seek to appeal the High Court ruling, fearing the decision will set a precedent for other local authorities to present legal challenges which threaten to throw the Government’s migration policy into disarray.
Dozens of protests have been organised for the weekend as many communities hope to replicate the results of the landmark ruling by applying pressure in their own areas.
Protesters with Union Jack flags and “Stop the Boats” placards have marched from Castle Park to Bristol city centre, playing music, including Wonderwall and Sweet Caroline and chanting: “Send them home.”
Counter-protesters chanting “refugees are welcome here” attempted to block the march and ended up in a violent confrontation with a wall of baton-wielding mounted police officers.
A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. Avon and Somerset Police said no officer sustained serious physical injury, but inquiries will be carried out after reports of assaults on officers.
Chief Insp Keith Smith said: “Our priority today has been to enable lawful peaceful protest for both groups.
“Our officers have dealt admirably with a really challenging situation and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them for their professionalism.”
Tensions also flared outside the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Horley on the border of West Sussex and Surrey after 200 anti-immigration protesters draped in St George’s flags came face-to-face with Stand Up to Racism protesters.
The Stand Up to Racism protesters chanted “no hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here” which were met with “no they’re f—–g not” from the other side of the street.
Protests previously broke out in the area after a migrant living in the hotel was found guilty of groping three different women as he cycled past them along the same bike path in Horley.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
