Critical Situation in the UK Prison System
There is a major crisis within the UK’s prison system, characterised by extreme overcrowding and an occupancy rate of approximately 99%. With fewer than 1,000 remaining spaces, there are over 73,000 pending crown court cases. Therefore, proposals for early release of inmates are being considered, raising serious concerns regarding public safety, particularly due to the significant proportion of foreign national offenders within the prison population.
