Labour appoints pro-migrant activist to human rights watchdog
Ali Harris, who opposed Tory attempts to control immigration, joins Equality
Labour has appointed a pro-migrant activist to a senior position on the board of the human rights watchdog.
Ali Harris, the chief executive of Equally Ours, a human rights charity, is one of two new interim commissioners to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
Ms Harris, who was appointed by Bridget Phillipson, the equalities minister and Education Secretary, just before Christmas, opposed Conservative attempts to control immigration.
Last week, Mary-Ann Stephenson, the new chairman of the EHRC, used her first major intervention to attack those who described migration as a risk to Britain.

On Thursday, Ms Phillipson defended the appointment and said: “This Government is committed to embedding fairness and equality into the heart of our agenda, and the EHRC has a key part to play in this.
“Ali Harris brings a wealth of experience and expertise in equality and human rights, and her appointment will ensure the EHRC can continue their crucial work as Britain’s independent equality and human rights regulator while recruitment is ongoing.”
A former caseworker at the Refugee Legal Centre, Ms Harris worked at Stonewall for four years as part of an initiative that offered training on LGBT issues to public sector organisations.
Record levels of both legal and illegal migration into Britain in recent years have led to concerns about their impact on community cohesion and cost to the taxpayer.
Ms Harris shared the hashtag #RefugeesWelcome in 2021, and in the same year rejected a landmark report that found Britain was a model for race relations and said the term “institutional racism” was being used too “liberally”.
She was among the signatories to an open letter that criticised the contents of the report and argued that not only was institutional racism real, but that tackling it was “fundamental”.

‘Radical activists’
On Tuesday, the Conservatives criticised Ms Phillipson’s decision to appoint Ms Harris, insisting that her views were at odds with public opinion.
Claire Coutinho, the shadow equalities minister, said: “If we are to maintain confidence in our equalities bodies, it is essential that they are not captured by radical activists with highly contested political views.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
