Khan’s London: Someone Now Leaves Every 75 Seconds Amid High Cost-of-Living and Soaring Crime

Sadiq Khan’s great London exodus: Someone now leaves capital every 75 seconds amid cost-of-living crisis and spiralling crimewave

Someone moves out of London every 75 seconds, according to a Daily Mail analysis that lays bare the capital’s exodus.

Almost 415,000 residents upped sticks to the Home Counties or beyond in 2024.

Offset by the 287,000 who ventured in the opposite direction, London‘s internal net migration stood at nearly -128,000 – one of the highest figures on record.

Experts say young families have been left with no choice but to flee due to cost-of-living pressures and rising property prices.

Soaring crime rates in ‘lawless London’ may also have played a role, commentators say.

Reform’s candidate for Mayor of London, Laila Cunningham, told the Daily Mail: ‘Sadiq Khan has allowed criminality to flourish in London and it’s holding this city back.

‘Not only do young people no longer want to live here, many are now moving away.

It’s hard not to conclude it’s because they simply don’t feel London is a safe place where you can raise a family.’

She added: ‘On day one as Mayor I will make it clear that the Met should be policing grooming gangs and real crime, not tweets. This city has been let down for too long by a Mayor who prioritises photo opportunities over results.’

With the exception of the West Midlands (-2,100), every other region of England saw an influx in terms of net internal migration – the movement of people within the UK.

The South West (+28,600) led the way in 2024, according to the Office for National Statistics. Rounding out the top three were the South East (+22,300) and the North West (+20,800).

Only two of London’s 32 boroughs – Havering (+2,100) and Bexley (+600) – logged an influx of people moving in.

Newham saw the biggest exodus (-15,000).

London’s overall net figure (-128,200) was the third highest since ONS records began, beaten only by 2023 and 2021.

Figures analysed by the Daily Mail don’t include immigration, the main driver of London’s booming population. Although tens of thousands have moved abroad to escape the city, even more have moved elsewhere within the UK.

Those heading abroad include drastic numbers of the super-rich, which helped cause the capital to no longer be amongst the top five cities favoured by millionaires and billionaires in a recent report.

It found that London is one of only two cities in the top 50 that now have fewer rich people than 10 years ago.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
